Choreographers must be age 18+
Pieces may be up to 5 minutes long

You may cast dancers under the age of 18 in your piece; however, you assume responsibility for them while they are participating in NACHMO events, and a signed parental permission slip must be provided for each minor dancer before they may attend the open rehearsals or performances. Email nachmodc[at]gmail.com if you need the permission slip.

Time during dancers’ auditions
Access to shared open rehearsal space
Discounted rehearsal space at area studios
Critical feedback on your work by an experienced panel
Video and photography of their piece from the NACHMO performances
NACHMO DC reserves the right to restrict access to benefits if deadlines and requirements are not met.
FOR DANCERS
NACHMO is a unique opportunity to be part of a short-term dance project that culminates in a professionally produced performance.
Casting decisions and rehearsal schedules are set by the individual choreographers and can vary from a few hours over the month to several rehearsals per week. Be up front about your schedule and expectations when communicating with your choreographer. Email nachmodc[at]gmail.com if you have questions about dancing in a piece.

2021 info
FORMAT AND STRUCTURE FOR NACHMO DC 2021
This information is being kept for choreographers to reference: registration has closed for NACHMO DC 2021.
Participation is free.
100% virtual - there will be no in-person events.
Due to the pandemic, NACHMO DC is not encouraging or condoning any in-person, indoor rehearsals or recording sessions between people from different households. Choreographers are responsible for the safety of their process, but no one should end up in a situation that is covid-unsafe.
Choreographers are invited to create movement during the month of January and refine that work in February.
Traditionally, the NACHMO January Challenge has been to produce a full piece in 31 days.
This year’s schedule is meant to be flexible and supportive, given the state of the world.
Our focus this year is on community and practice.
We will facilitate a space where artists can connect with one another and share support during their process.
This will happen mainly through our Slack channel and Instagram.
We also plan to host at least one Zoom happy hour in January to foster face-to-face connection among artists.
The final performance of pieces created during NACHMO will take the form of an online video festival.
Videos will be available to the public (free) for two weeks starting March 6, 2021.
Choreographers may choose to keep their videos public after that.
We will hold a live online premiere of videos the weekend of March 6-7.
Registered NACHMO DC choreographers get the following benefits:
Access to our Slack channel
Connect with other choreographers
Find dancers for your piece
Get feedback on phrases or snippets during your process
Share and learn about dance on film, video editing, and online resources
Feedback on your draft piece from our panel of experts in the DC dance community
Post your video on your preferred platform by February 5
Feedback will be delivered to you by February 17 to allow time for refinement of your final piece
Inclusion of your final piece in our online video festival
Submit your final edited video and program info by March 1
We will upload it to our video festival
Requirements to present work in the online festival:
Register by end-of-day January 11.
Submit a video of the final piece by end-of-day March 1.
Your piece video may be no longer than 5 minutes.
One piece per choreographer.
If casting dancers under the age of 18, parental permission must be documented.
Want a more casual way to participate in NACHMO DC?
If you would rather play with movement than make a full piece, you are still welcome to register for NACHMO DC, partake in the Slack channel, and find movement prompts on NACHMO HQ via Instagram or Facebook throughout January (#nachmoprompt).
You can always register and then decide along the way how much participation is right for you.
Dancers wanting to perform in another person’s piece, but not choreograph:
You will be invited to the Slack channel and included in our Zoom happy hour(s).
Email us to let us know you’d like to participate this way!
