We are dancemakers, story tellers, and thinkers, seeking to raise the profile of modern dance in D.C. Through collaboration and performance, we challenge our bodies and minds to create meaningful art that evokes emotion and makes audiences think. We value a collective process that draws together people from diverse artistic backgrounds. We are Glade Dance Collective.

join us for the 5th annual
nachmo dc in 2019!

January is  NAtional CHoreography MOnth (NACHMO). NACHMO is a challenge to create a dance in just 31 days. Start to think about how you may participate with us — as a choreographer, dancer, or audience member!

FOR choreographers

Deadlines and requirements:

  • Choreographers must be age 18+

  • Pieces may be up to 5 minutes long

  • Register and buy your Artist Pass by January 7

  • Submit your program and tech information via email by February 5

  • Show your work at the informal studio showing on February 3 from 10am-2pm

  • You may cast dancers under the age of 18 in your piece; however, you assume responsibility for them while they are participating in NACHMO events, and a signed parental permission slip must be provided for each minor dancer before they may attend the open rehearsals or performances. Email nachmodc[at]gmail.com if you need the permission slip.

Registered Artist Pass choreographers enjoy these benefits:

  • A guaranteed spot for their piece in one of the shows at the Jack Guidone Theater at Joy of Motion | Friendship Heights on February 16-17*

  • Time during dancers’ auditions**

  • Access to shared open rehearsal space

  • A Choreo Buddy for support during the creative process

  • Critical feedback on your work by an experienced panel

  • Video of their piece from the NACHMO performances

*Choreographers and their dancers should be available for both dates and clearly communicate any scheduling issues to nachmodc[at]gmail.com

**In order to present your piece at the auditions, you must have registered and paid for your Artist Pass:

  • Deadline is December 14 for the first audition (December 17)

  • Deadline is January 4 for the second audition (January 6)

Participation in auditions is completely optional. You do not need to show work or cast dancers from the auditions to participate as a choreographer.

NACHMO DC reserves the right to restrict access to benefits if deadlines and requirements are not met.

For dancers

NACHMO is a unique opportunity to be part of a short-term dance project that culminates in a professionally produced performance. Join us!

NACHMO DC will host two auditions for choreographers and dancers to get to know one another. Casting decisions and rehearsal schedules are set by the individual choreographers and can vary from a few hours over the month to several rehearsals per week. Be up front about your schedule and expectations when communicating with your choreographer.

Participation in NACHMO DC, including the auditions, is FREE for dancers. Fill out the dancer interest form (whether or not you can attend the auditions) to have your name given to choreographers seeking dancers.

About nachmo

To quote the founders, Sharyn Korey and Anna Brown Massey, ❝For one month each year, we put aside our excuses, our hesitations, and perhaps our day jobs to work intensely on making dance.❞

Started in New York in 2010 and inspired by National Novel Writing Month, NACHMO pushes dancers to choreograph by challenging them to create a new work in just one month. Since 2010, NACHMO has expanded from New York to include Boston, San Francisco, D.C., and other regions.

NACHMO DC

NACHMO DC began in late 2014 through a partnership between Glade and New Street Dance Group, with our first showcase in 2015. Now celebrating the fifth  year of NACHMO DC, we are excited to continue to help DC artists kick off the new year with dance.

Check out the NACHMO DC YouTube channel to see some of our past creations!

Congrats to past NACHMO DC choreographers!
